A bright spot at the end of a tragic year for family

Fiona Patterson has not had a good year.

In March, she lost 4 family members in an automobile crash.  Six weeks later, her grandmother and her aunt died of natural causes.  Shortly after that, Fiona herself was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Still, Fiona is keeping her chin up.  Helping her do that is the fact that she recently won $24,000 in the lottery.  Not huge wealth, but at least a positive event in a very difficult year.

Miss Patterson says, Things are not as bad as they could be.

9/11 widow loses millions

Kathy Trant has had a double tragedy.

First, she tragically lost her husband on 9/11.  Her husband Dan was killed in the World Trade Center attack.

As compensation, she received a large settlement and chose to receive it in all cash: $5 million in a one-time payment.  Sadly, she did not seek advice or use judgment with the money.

She spent about $2 million on her home on Long Island, traveled the world, spent as much as $500,000 on shoes, and bought cosmetic surgery for her friends, or even for strangers.

Is your name Tim? You should buy a lottery ticket

If you are a man named Tim, your chances of winning the lottery are greater than any other name.

At least that’s what the statistics say.  Lottery officials in Iowa were curious about how a person’s name related to how often they won the lottery (they only looked at winners of at least $100,000).  They found that “Tims” won the big jackpots 33 times since the lottery began in 1985.  Coming in second was the name John with 26 big wins.

Definition of injustice: repeat RAPIST wins lottery

If there is anyone in the world that is not deserving of lottery winnings, it is Iorworth Hoare.

Hoare has spent roughly 30 years in prison since 1973, after being convicted of one rape, three attempted rapes, and two indecent assaults.  Now he is out of prison, and he won the lottery.  How much did he win?  In excess of US$14 million.

Now, because of his criminal record, he is restricted to only receiving about US$17,000 per month from his winnings.

Group of nurses can now afford new stethoscopes

If the Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center seems a little short of nurses in the near future, we will know the reason why.  A group of 16 RNs won the Florida Lotto, and are sharing a total jackpot of $6 million.

And here’s the interesting part: before they got together to claim the winnings and speak to the press, all of the nurses turned up for their regular shift on Sunday morning (they all work in the cardiac section of the third floor).
